Long-Neck End Mills Overview

This solid carbide long-neck end mill series is designed for machining deep grooves, narrow slots, recessed features and hard-to-reach surfaces where a standard-length cutter cannot provide sufficient clearance. The reduced-neck construction extends machining reach while limiting contact between the tool body and workpiece wall. Square-end, ball-nose, corner-radius and micro-diameter configurations are available with 2-flute or 4-flute geometry. Different carbide grades, coatings, cutting diameters, neck lengths and overall lengths can be selected for steel, stainless steel, mold steel, hardened steel and other application-specific materials.

Key Features and Machining Benefits

Extended Machining Reach

The long-neck construction provides clearance for deep slots, recessed walls, narrow cavities and difficult-to-access machining areas.

Reduced-Neck Clearance

A controlled neck diameter helps reduce interference between the tool body and workpiece while maintaining the required reach.

Multiple End Profiles

Square-end, ball-nose and corner-radius geometries support deep-slot milling, 3D contouring, profiling and cavity finishing.

Flexible Series Configuration

Micro diameters, extended neck lengths, different carbide grades, 2/4-flute designs and application-specific coatings are available.

Solid Carbide Long-Neck End Mill FAQ

Find answers about long-neck geometry, available end profiles, machining applications, material selection, tool deflection, custom dimensions, samples, lead time and OEM supply.

What is a solid carbide long-neck end mill?
A long-neck end mill has a reduced neck between the cutting section and full-diameter shank. This construction provides additional clearance for machining deep grooves, recessed features, narrow cavities and other areas that cannot be reached with a standard end mill.
What is the difference between a long-neck end mill and a long-flute end mill?
A long-neck end mill uses a relatively short cutting edge combined with an extended reduced-neck section for clearance. A long-flute end mill has a longer cutting edge for greater axial cutting depth. Long-neck tools are generally more suitable for reaching deep features while controlling cutting-edge contact.
Which end profiles are available in this series?
The series includes square-end, ball-nose, corner-radius and micro-diameter long-neck end mills. The end profile should be selected according to whether the operation involves slots, flat surfaces, vertical walls, curved surfaces, 3D contours or corner transitions.
When should I select a square, ball-nose or corner-radius type?
Choose a square-end type for grooves, flat bottoms and vertical-wall profiling. Select a ball-nose type for curved surfaces, 3D contouring and mold finishing. A corner-radius type provides stronger corners for profiling, semi-finishing and machining surfaces with specified fillet radii.
Are 2-flute and 4-flute configurations available?
Yes. A 2-flute configuration provides greater chip space and is commonly selected for small diameters, slotting and non-ferrous materials. A 4-flute configuration offers a stronger tool core and more cutting contacts for profiling and finishing steel or other suitable materials.
What materials can these long-neck end mills machine?
Available configurations can be produced for carbon steel, alloy steel, mold steel, stainless steel and hardened steel. Aluminum and other non-ferrous materials require a sharp, chip-clearance-focused geometry with an appropriate polished or low-friction surface treatment.
Which carbide grades and coatings are available?
HRC45, HRC55, HRC60 and HRC65 carbide series are available. Coating options include AlTiN, TiAlN, TiSiN, AlTiSiN and TiN. The final carbide grade and coating are selected according to the workpiece material, hardness, cutting temperature and machining conditions.
How can tool deflection and chatter be reduced?
Use the shortest practical neck length and tool overhang, maintain rigid clamping and reduce radial engagement when machining at extended reach. Cutting speed, feed rate and axial depth should also be adjusted according to the cutting diameter, effective reach and workpiece material.
Can these tools be used for deep full-width slotting?
Deep full-width slotting should be evaluated carefully because the extended neck reduces overall tool rigidity. Multiple step-down passes, suitable chip evacuation and conservative cutting engagement are generally recommended. Final cutting parameters depend on the diameter, neck length, material and machine rigidity.
Can you manufacture custom long-neck dimensions?
Yes. Cutting diameter, flute length, neck diameter, effective reach, shank diameter, overall length, ball radius and corner radius can be manufactured according to an approved drawing. Micro-diameter and extended-reach non-standard tools can also be reviewed.
Can I order samples before placing a bulk order?
Yes. Standard-size or custom samples can be reviewed before bulk production. Please provide the complete dimensions, end profile, workpiece material, hardness, machining depth and required quantity so that the sample configuration can be confirmed.
What is the production lead time?
In-stock standard sizes are generally prepared for shipment within 1–3 working days. Lead time for custom dimensions, special carbide grades, coatings, samples and OEM orders is confirmed separately after the technical specification and order quantity have been reviewed.
Do you provide OEM and private-label services?
Yes. OEM services include custom tool dimensions, carbide grades, coatings, laser-marked logos, tool codes, specification labels, protective tubes and private-label packaging for distributors, tooling brands and repeat-order customers.
What information should I provide for a quotation?
Please provide the end profile, flute count, cutting diameter, flute length, neck diameter, effective reach, shank diameter, overall length, workpiece material and hardness, machining operation, tolerance, coating requirement and order quantity. A drawing is recommended for non-standard tools.
