◆VNMG/VNGG 160402/160404 Ceramic Turning Inserts Overview
VNMG and VNGG 1604 turning inserts use a 35° diamond shape for profile access and finishing of suitable workpieces. The 160402 and 160404 size codes identify 0.2 and 0.4 mm nominal corner radii. Select the complete geometry and grade according to the workpiece, holder and required surface finish.
This page covers carbide and cermet configurations by confirmation. A precision-ground VNGG geometry and a VNMG geometry may have different edge preparation and chip control even when the nominal body size matches. Steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum require different application-specific grades; one insert is not specified for every material shown in the range illustrations.
Send the full insert code, grade, chipbreaker and holder model when requesting a replacement or sample. The size code alone does not identify the cutting material, coating or application range.

◆Specifications & Size Chart
The 160402 and 160404 codes identify nominal 0.2 and 0.4 mm corner radii on a 35° diamond, negative-relief insert. Manufacturer catalogues for selected VNMG and VNGG 1604 items list IC 9.525 mm and thickness 4.76 mm. The table below is a size-code reference; availability, fixing-hole specification, cutting substrate and edge preparation must be confirmed for the exact ordered item.
| Size Code | IC Reference | Thickness Reference | Nose Radius | Configuration Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VNMG 160402 | 9.525 mm* | 4.76 mm* | 0.2 mm | Grade, chipbreaker and availability |
| VNMG 160404 | 9.525 mm* | 4.76 mm* | 0.4 mm | Grade, chipbreaker and availability |
| VNGG 160402 | 9.525 mm* | 4.76 mm* | 0.2 mm | Ground geometry and grade |
| VNGG 160404 | 9.525 mm* | 4.76 mm* | 0.4 mm | Ground geometry and grade |
◆Material & Geometry Checklist
| Parameter | What to Confirm |
|---|---|
| Substrate | Carbide or cermet by complete grade code. Do not identify material from coating color or the 1604 size alone. |
| Tolerance & edge | VNMG and VNGG have different tolerance letters. Compare drawing, ground profile, edge preparation and nose radius. |
| Chipbreaker | Supplier-specific suffix and recommended feed/depth-of-cut window; confirm chip control in the actual workpiece. |
| Workpiece | State material grade and hardness. Steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum require separate grade and edge selection. |
| Holder & supply | Holder model, clamping seat, availability, sample quantity, pack format and lead time. |
◆How to Select the Insert
◆Starting Cutting Data
The illustrations do not identify a specific grade or provide verified feed, cutting speed and depth-of-cut values. Obtain the supplier's starting range for the complete insert code and workpiece. For turning, n = (1000 × Vc) / (π × D), where n is spindle speed in RPM, Vc is cutting speed in m/min and D is the workpiece diameter at the cut in mm.

◆Product FAQs
What are VNMG and VNGG 1604 inserts used for?
Their 35° diamond geometry provides access for suitable external finishing and detailed profile turning. Confirm the workpiece, edge geometry, grade and toolholder before selecting the insert; the size code alone does not define a cutting application.
What is the difference between 160402 and 160404?
The last two digits indicate a nominal 0.2 or 0.4 mm nose radius. The smaller radius can help with fine profile access and lighter feeds; the 0.4 mm radius gives more corner support. Actual finish also depends on chipbreaker, feed and setup stability.
What is the difference between VNMG and VNGG?
Both codes describe 35° diamond inserts with negative relief, but the third letter identifies a different tolerance class. A VNGG model may have a precision-ground edge in a selected series; the exact grinding, chipbreaker, dimensions and holder fit must be checked from the complete code and drawing.
Are these inserts ceramic?
The two range illustrations describe carbide and cermet examples. VNMG/VNGG and the 1604 size do not identify the substrate. Ask for the complete material grade and supplier datasheet before ordering an insert specifically as ceramic.
Can one grade machine steel, stainless steel, cast iron and aluminum?
The image shows examples of separate material-specific insert grades. Confirm a substrate, coating and cutting edge for each workpiece grade and operation. Do not apply the full range of pictured materials to one complete item code.
How do I choose starting cutting parameters?
Provide the complete insert code, workpiece grade and hardness, feed direction, coolant, cutting depth and target finish. Obtain the grade-specific speed, feed and depth-of-cut range, then validate chip control and wear in a machining trial.
◆Ordering & OEM FAQs
What should I send to match an existing insert?
Send the full manufacturer designation, grade, chipbreaker, photos of both faces and the box label, holder code, workpiece, cutting conditions and required quantity. Confirm dimensional fit and performance in a controlled trial.
Are all four size combinations available in both materials?
Availability has not been established by the two illustrations. List each required VNMG or VNGG size, substrate, grade and quantity separately so the offered codes, stock, pack count and lead time can be confirmed.
Can I request samples?
Provide the complete configuration and planned test conditions. Confirm sample availability and compare edge wear, finish, chip control and dimensional consistency under the same machining setup.
Can I request private-label packaging?
Send the item list, label or box artwork, pack quantity and forecast volume. Marking, packaging, minimum order quantity and delivery terms are confirmed for the selected grade and model.
