Panoramica del prodotto

Il DIN Standard Cobalt HSS Twist Drill for Stainless Steel is a jobber-length, straight-shank drilling tool designed for repeatable professional metalworking. Its DIN 338 dimensional format makes diameter and length selection straightforward, while M35 high-speed steel with approximately 5% cobalt provides better hot hardness and wear resistance than conventional general-purpose HSS when cutting stainless steel and other demanding metals.

Fully ground flutes provide accurate geometry and a smooth chip path. A 135° split-point option helps reduce drill walking and cutting pressure, while a regular point is available for general drilling requirements. For additional materials, coatings, and HSS grades, compare the M2/M35/M42 coated HSS twist drill series.

Why M35 Cobalt HSS for Stainless Steel?

Improved Hot Hardness
Cobalt helps the cutting edge retain hardness when heat builds during stainless-steel drilling.
Wear-Resistant Cutting Edge
M35 provides a practical balance of toughness and wear resistance for workshop and production use.
More Stable Cutting
A sharp, fully ground geometry supports steady chip formation when speed, feed, and coolant are correctly applied.
DIN-Based Selection
Standardized diameter and length groups simplify replacement, inventory, and repeat ordering.

Point Geometry & Ground Construction

135 degree split point on a cobalt HSS twist drill

135° Split Point
Helps the drill start with less walking and lower thrust. A 118° regular point is available for general-purpose applications.

Fully ground cobalt HSS twist drill flute and body

Fully Ground Geometry
Precision-ground flutes and body geometry support accurate guidance, consistent cutting edges, and smoother chip flow.

Stainless-Steel Drilling Recommendations

Cobalt HSS twist drill machining a metal workpiece
Use a positive, continuous feedAvoid rubbing or dwelling, which can work-harden stainless steel at the hole entrance.
Control cutting speed and heatBegin conservatively and adjust according to material grade, drill diameter, rigidity, and chip condition.
Apply suitable cutting fluidMaintain lubrication at the cutting zone to reduce friction and carry away heat.
Keep the setup rigidUse minimal overhang, secure workholding, and a holder with low runout.
Clear chips before packing occursFor deeper holes, use an appropriate retract or peck strategy based on chip evacuation and coolant access.

Quick Troubleshooting Guide

Observed Condition Items to Check
Drill walks at entry Use the split-point option, shorten overhang, improve spot location, and verify runout.
Squealing, rubbing, or rapid work hardening Avoid dwell, review feed, reduce excessive speed, and ensure the cutting edge is sharp.
Blue chips or excessive heat Reduce cutting speed and improve cutting-fluid delivery and chip removal.
Chipped lips or drill breakage Check workholding, runout, interrupted entry, excessive feed, and chip packing.
Oversize or tapered hole Inspect point symmetry, holder condition, spindle alignment, and tool wear.

Size Chart & Specifications

The supplied chart lists 32 diameter entries from 0.4 mm to a listed upper band of 13.3–14.0 mm. For each entry, it gives overall length L and flute length l. All values below are in millimeters. Match the requested diameter to its length entry, then confirm the exact cobalt HSS grade, point geometry, coating and shank dimensions for the ordered model.

Nota tecnica: The source chart prints “5.4–5.0” and “10.7–10.8” as diameter bands and lists a longer flute for Ø1.2 than Ø1.3. These are reproduced as shown; verify the intended values before publishing or quoting those sizes. Diameter bands are length groupings, not a promise that every intermediate diameter is stocked. Flute length l is a tool dimension, not guaranteed usable drilling depth.

Specification confirmation: The chart does not state the exact cobalt HSS grade or cobalt content, point angle, coating, shank diameter, manufacturing standard or tolerances. Confirm these for the ordered model; stainless steel suitability depends on the workpiece and cutting conditions.

HSS Drill Speeds & Feed Settings

Select starting cutting data for the confirmed cobalt HSS grade, point geometry, workpiece stainless grade and hardness, hole depth and coolant supply. The dimension chart does not provide speed or feed recommendations.

Setting Speed & Feed

Spindle speed: n = (1000 × Vc) / (π × D), where n is RPM, Vc is cutting speed in m/min and D is drill diameter in mm.

Feed rate: F = n × f, where F is feed in mm/min and f is feed per revolution in mm/rev.

Calculation example: At 500 RPM and 0.10 mm/rev, programmed feed is 50 mm/min. This illustrates the formula only; these values are not a recommendation for a specific material.

Application Note: Verify tool clamping, workpiece support, suitable coolant and chip evacuation. Stainless steel may work harden if the drill rubs. For deeper holes, evaluate whether pecking or a dedicated long-drill design is required. Validate starting data with a trial hole.

For additional reference, see our HSS cutting tools speeds & feeds guide. Confirm tool-specific values for the selected cobalt HSS drill and stainless steel grade.

Product FAQs

Are these cobalt HSS drills suitable for every stainless steel grade?

The range is intended for stainless steel drilling, but the appropriate drill configuration and cutting data depend on the stainless grade, hardness, hole depth, machine rigidity and coolant. Provide those details when requesting a recommendation.

Which diameters and lengths are listed?

The size chart contains 32 entries, starting at Ø0.4 mm and ending with the listed Ø13.3–14.0 mm band. Overall lengths range from 20 to 160 mm, and flute lengths from 5 to 108 mm. Diameter bands group length dimensions; confirm the exact diameter and availability before ordering.

What cobalt percentage, point angle and coating do the drills have?

The supplied dimension chart does not specify an HSS grade, cobalt percentage, point angle or coating. Confirm the configuration for the exact model in the quotation or product drawing.

Does flute length equal the maximum drilling depth?

No. Flute length is a physical tool dimension. Usable drilling depth also depends on the drill point, chip clearance, workholding and whether the hole is blind or through. Confirm the required hole depth before selecting a length.

What speeds and feeds should I use for stainless steel?

The dimension chart does not contain cutting data. Select a starting cutting speed and feed per revolution for the confirmed drill geometry, stainless grade, hole depth and coolant setup. Keep the cutting edge engaged, provide suitable coolant and validate the settings with a trial hole.

Are all diameter ranges in the supplied chart confirmed?

Three entries need confirmation: the chart prints “5.4–5.0” and “10.7–10.8” in the diameter column, and lists a longer flute for Ø1.2 mm than for Ø1.3 mm. These values are reproduced in Specifications as shown; request confirmation before using the affected sizes in an order.
