Coated HSS Twist Drill Bits – M2, M35 & M42 Overview

This coated twist drill range brings together M2, M35 and M42 high-speed steel options for metal drilling. The supplied dimension chart groups cutting diameters from 0.5 to 20 mm into 28 bands, with overall lengths of 36–205 mm and flute lengths of 14–140 mm. Choose the steel grade, coating and point geometry for the workpiece and drilling conditions, then match the selected diameter to its listed length band. The chart does not identify a point angle, coating type or which material grades are available at each diameter; confirm those specifications for the ordered model.

Key Configuration

◎
HSS Grade Selection

M2, M35 and M42 are offered as grade options in the product title. Confirm the grade for the requested diameter and workpiece; M2 is not a cobalt grade.

↕
Size-Specific Lengths

Each of the 28 diameter bands has a corresponding overall length L and flute length L1. Select by exact diameter and required reach.

◆
Application-Matched Finish

Confirm the coating or surface treatment for each ordered variant. The dimension chart does not name or assign a coating.

Key Product Advantages

Three HSS Grades

Review M2, M35 or M42 against the specific workpiece and tool configuration.

Diameter Coverage

The supplied reference covers diameter bands from 0.5 to 20 mm.

Length Reference

Check L and L1 for holder clearance and chip evacuation.

Coated Options

Choose the actual coating with the material and process requirements in view.

Drilling Applications

These twist drills are intended for metal holemaking. Select the grade, point geometry and coating according to the workpiece, required hole size and depth, machine rigidity and available coolant. For stainless or other difficult materials, obtain a tool-specific recommendation rather than assuming every grade and coating has the same suitability.

Application Note: L1 is the physical flute length, not a guaranteed drilling depth. Account for the point, chip clearance, tool holding and through-hole breakthrough when determining usable depth.

Workpiece Material Selection

Provide the workpiece grade and hardness when selecting an HSS substrate and coating. Steel, stainless steel and other metal groups require different cutting conditions; the supplied dimension chart does not establish a material rating for every M2, M35 or M42 configuration.

Size Chart & Specifications

The supplied chart lists 28 cutting-diameter bands between 0.5 and 20 mm. For each band, it gives overall length L and flute length L1. All values below are in millimeters. Check the exact requested diameter within its band; the chart does not list individual stock sizes, HSS grade, coating or point geometry.

Technical Note: Diameter bands are length groupings, not a promise that every intermediate diameter is stocked. L1 is the flute length, not the maximum usable drilling depth. Confirm exact diameter, point angle, shank size, flute design, coating and selected M2, M35 or M42 grade before ordering. A DIN standard and material-specific drilling depth cannot be inferred from this chart.

Grade and coating confirmation: The original page identifies M2, M35 and M42 as options, but the dimension chart does not assign grade or coating type to any row. The specific configuration should be confirmed in the quotation or product drawing.

HSS Drill Speeds & Feed Settings

Select starting cutting data for the confirmed tool grade, coating, point geometry, workpiece grade and coolant supply. The dimension chart does not provide speed or feed recommendations.

Setting Speed & Feed

Spindle speed: n = (1000 × Vc) / (π × D), where n is RPM, Vc is cutting speed in m/min and D is drill diameter in mm.

Feed rate: F = n × f, where F is feed in mm/min and f is feed per revolution in mm/rev.

Calculation example: At 500 RPM and 0.10 mm/rev, programmed feed is 50 mm/min. This illustrates the formula only; these values are not a recommendation for a specific material.

Application Note: Verify tool clamping, workpiece support, coolant and chip evacuation. For deeper holes, evaluate whether pecking, a pilot hole or a dedicated long-drill design is required. Validate starting data with a trial hole.

For additional reference, see our HSS cutting tools speeds & feeds guide. Confirm tool-specific values for the chosen HSS drill and workpiece.

HSS Drill Customization & OEM

HSS drills can be reviewed against your hole requirements, workpiece material and machine setup. We can discuss application-specific dimensions, cutting geometry, tool material, surface finish and private-label presentation. Available options depend on the drill type and the confirmed manufacturing specification.

01

Point & Cutting Geometry

Review point angle, point thinning, flute design and cutting-edge geometry according to the workpiece and drilling operation. Geometry options vary between twist drills, center drills and special drills.

02

Dimensions & Shank

Specify cutting diameter, flute length, overall length and the required shank configuration. Straight-shank, Morse-taper, extra-long and other constructions are reviewed by product series.

03

Finish & OEM Branding

Review a suitable coating or surface finish where applicable. Laser marking, labels and packaging can be discussed for distributor and private-label orders.

FAQ & Technical Support

Grade selection, drill dimensions, cutting conditions and ordering guidance for coated M2, M35 and M42 HSS twist drills.

Product & Application FAQs

What is the difference between M2, M35 and M42 HSS?

M2 is a general-purpose high-speed steel. M35 and M42 are cobalt-alloyed HSS grades that can be considered when greater hot hardness is required. The best choice also depends on drill geometry, coating, workpiece grade, machine setup and cutting conditions. Confirm which grades are available for your requested diameter.

Which drill diameters and lengths are listed?

The size chart groups diameters from 0.5 to 20 mm into 28 bands. Corresponding overall lengths range from 36 to 205 mm, and flute lengths from 14 to 140 mm. Select the exact diameter first, then check its L and L1 values in the chart. A diameter band does not establish that every intermediate size is stocked.

What do L and L1 mean in the size chart?

L is the drill's overall length and L1 is its flute length. Use both values to check tool reach and holder clearance. L1 is a physical tool dimension; it is not a guaranteed usable drilling depth because the point, chip space and drilling method also matter.

Which coating and point angle does this series use?

The supplied dimension chart does not identify the coating type or point angle, and it does not map those configurations to individual sizes. Specify the workpiece and drilling conditions so the coating and point geometry can be confirmed for the selected model.

Can these drills be used for stainless steel?

An application-matched HSS grade, geometry and coating may be selected for stainless-steel drilling. Provide the stainless-steel grade, hole diameter and depth, machine setup and coolant information for review. The dimension chart alone does not establish that every M2, M35 or M42 variant suits every stainless-steel grade.

How should I select speed and feed?

Select a starting cutting speed and feed per revolution for the confirmed drill grade, coating, diameter, workpiece and coolant conditions. Spindle speed can be calculated from cutting speed and diameter; feed in mm/min equals RPM multiplied by feed per revolution. Validate the starting settings with a trial hole.

Are these drills suitable for deep holes?

Check the required depth against the specific drill geometry and flute length. A long L1 dimension does not by itself establish a deep-hole rating. Chip evacuation, coolant delivery, machine stability and the drilling cycle must also be reviewed; a dedicated long or deep-hole drill may be required.

Ordering & Customization FAQs

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide the exact diameter, quantity, preferred M2, M35 or M42 grade, workpiece material and hardness, hole depth, machine or holder details, and any coating or point-geometry requirements. Include a drawing for non-standard dimensions or tolerances.

Can the dimensions, finish and OEM presentation be customized?

Requests for non-standard diameter, length, point geometry, suitable surface finish, laser marking and packaging can be reviewed. Available options, tolerances and inspection criteria are confirmed for the requested design before production.

Are samples and mixed-size orders available?

Sample and mixed-size requests can be reviewed. Minimum quantity, stock availability and dispatch timing depend on the selected diameter, HSS grade, coating and any customization. Send a size-and-quantity list for confirmation.
