HY Tools Solid Carbide End Mill Series: Quick Selection Guide
HY Tools Product Selection Resource
This guide helps you compare our current HRC45, HRC55, HRC65 and aluminum solid carbide end mill options before checking a specific model and size. Start with the workpiece material, then select the cutting geometry by operation and confirm the dimensions needed for the actual feature.
Scope of this guide: HRC45, HRC55 and HRC65 are HY Tools product-series labels used to organize typical starting choices. They are not universal carbide-grade or coating standards. Final selection also depends on material grade, hardness, cutting engagement, reach, coolant and machine rigidity.

Use the four steps below to narrow the product range. The table provides a starting direction for product review; it does not confirm final suitability or direct equivalence with another manufacturer’s tool.
| Material des Werkstücks | HY Tools Starting Direction | Common Tool Starting Point | Key Details to Confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Steel & Alloy Steel | HRC45 or HRC55 series, depending on the material and production requirement | 4-flute square or corner-radius geometry for suitable side milling, shoulders and general machining | Grade · hardness · slotting or side milling |
| Mold Steel & Pre-Hardened Steel | HRC55 series as a common candidate; review HRC65 options when the actual hardness and conditions require it | Square, corner radius or ball nose according to the machined feature | Hardness · roughing or finishing · required reach |
| Higher-Hardness Steel | HRC65 series as a candidate for application review | Square or ball nose geometry selected by the feature and finishing strategy | Measured HRC · tool overhang · machine rigidity |
| Rostfreier Stahl | Application-specific coated series after the stainless grade and operation are confirmed | Geometry chosen for edge support, chip control and actual engagement | Stainless grade · cutting engagement · coolant |
| Aluminum & Suitable Non-Ferrous Materials | HY Tools aluminum series with polished, uncoated or DLC options by model | 2-flute or 3-flute aluminum geometry with suitable chip space | Alloy grade · slotting or side milling · surface finish |

Important: Do not choose a series from workpiece hardness alone. Two customers machining material at the same hardness may still require different flute forms, edge preparation, coating, cutting length or tool reach.
A brand and model code, catalog page, drawing or clear product photos are enough to begin an initial comparison.
Compare the HY Tools End Mill Series
The HY Tools end mill series labels provide a convenient way to organize current products, but each linked model still needs to be checked for its geometry, dimensions, carbide substrate and coating.
General Steel Starting Range
A practical starting range for suitable general steel applications and less demanding machining conditions. Select the tool type by operation rather than using the series label alone.
View HRC45 / HRC55 Steel OptionSteel, Alloy Steel & Mold Steel Range
A common production starting range for steel, alloy steel and suitable mold-steel applications where wear resistance and stable cutting are important.
View HRC45 / HRC55 Square End MillHigher-Hardness Steel Candidate Range
A candidate range for higher-hardness and hardened-steel applications after the actual hardness, operation, engagement and setup rigidity have been reviewed.
View HRC65 Square End MillAluminum & Non-Ferrous Range
Aluminum-specific tools prioritize chip evacuation, a sharp edge and low material adhesion. The correct flute count still depends on chip volume and cutting engagement.
View Aluminum End MillsChoose the Tool Geometry by Operation
After narrowing the product series by workpiece material, select the cutting geometry according to the feature and operation. Tool shape should not be determined from the HRC series label.
Vierkant-Schaftfräser
A common starting geometry for flat-bottom pockets, shoulders, profiles and suitable slotting or side-milling operations. Full-slot and light-radial cuts should be reviewed separately.
Schaftfräser mit Kugelkopf
Used for curved surfaces, cavities, dies, molds and 3D contouring. Confirm the ball radius, reach and finishing step-over.
Corner-Radius End Mill
The radius can provide more edge support than a sharp square corner, but it must match the permitted internal corner geometry of the workpiece.
Schrupp-Schaftfräser
Consider a serrated roughing geometry when material-removal efficiency and chip segmentation are priorities. A separate finishing operation may still be required.
Long-Neck End Mill
Used where the cutting edge must reach below surrounding features. Select only the neck and projection required because additional reach increases deflection risk.
Micro End Mill
Suitable for small-diameter features where runout, holder quality, spindle condition, cutting depth and handling become especially important.
Confirm Dimensions, Radius and Tool Reach
Once the series and tool geometry are identified, confirm the actual dimensions. A model cannot be matched reliably from cutting diameter and flute count alone.
Example Size Description
Ø8 × 20 × Ø8 × 60 mmCutting diameter × cutting length × shank diameter × overall length
- Cutting diameter: Confirm the required feature size and tolerance.
- Schnittlänge: Use only the flute length required for the actual cutting depth.
- Shank diameter: Check compatibility with the holder and collet.
- Overall length: Additional length should only be selected when reach requires it.
- Corner or ball radius: Match the part geometry and drawing requirement.
- Neck length and diameter: Confirm clearance for ribs, walls and deep cavities.
Two tools marked Ø8 × 20 × Ø8 × 60 mm may still differ in flute profile, core design, corner geometry, neck clearance, tolerance, substrate, coating and intended application. Treat a possible replacement as a candidate for comparison and testing.
Typical HY Tools Coating and Finish Options
The options below describe representative HY Tools configurations. Actual coating depends on the specific product model and application. Do not identify a coating from tool color or an HRC label alone.
| Coating / Finish | Representative HY Tools Use | Selection Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| AlTiN | Selected general-steel and HRC45-series product configurations | Confirm the exact model, operation, cutting temperature and coolant condition |
| TiSiN | Selected HRC55 steel and mold-steel product configurations | Not every HRC55 tool uses the same coating; geometry-specific products may differ |
| TiAlN | Selected steel, stainless-steel or higher-temperature cutting configurations | Confirm the product specification rather than identifying the coating from color |
| AlTiSiN / Nano Blue | Selected HRC65 and higher-hardness product configurations | Nano Blue is a product-series description; confirm the actual coating specification by model |
| Polished / Uncoated | Selected aluminum, copper and suitable non-ferrous end mills | Flute geometry, chip space, alloy grade and coolant remain essential |
| DLC | Low-friction option for selected aluminum, copper and suitable non-ferrous applications | Confirm compatibility with the exact material, operation and cutting conditions |

Coating supports wear and heat management, but it cannot correct an unsuitable flute form, weak edge design, excessive overhang or poor chip evacuation. Coating suppliers also use different compositions, layer structures and trade names. For a broader technical reference, review the Oerlikon Balzers coating portfolio .
Compare an Existing End Mill Model
Distributors and buyers do not need to reconstruct every machining parameter before contacting HY Tools. Current model information can be used to begin the review, but final equivalence should not be confirmed from appearance or dimensions alone.
Send the current brand, full model code, package label or catalog page.
Review diameter, cutting length, shank, overall length, radius and neck.
Check material, hardness, operation, engagement, coolant, reach and quantity.
Approve a candidate through controlled testing of accuracy, finish, stability and wear.
For replacement requests: A current model, drawing, catalog page or clear tool photos are enough for an initial dimensional review. Sample approval is still required before treating the candidate as a production replacement.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
These answers clarify how to use the HY Tools end mill series guide when only partial application or product information is available.
Are HRC45, HRC55 and HRC65 universal carbide grades?
No. In this guide they are HY Tools product-series labels that help organize typical starting choices. They do not define a universal carbide substrate, coating or guaranteed limit across manufacturers.
Can I identify the coating from its color?
No. Similar-looking tools may use different coating compositions, layer structures or substrates. Confirm the product model and specification rather than relying on color.
Can HY Tools review a request if I only have a model code or photo?
Yes. A model code, package label, catalog page, drawing or clear product photos can begin the comparison. Material, operation and other missing details can then be confirmed before sample testing.
Are two end mills with the same dimensions equivalent?
Not necessarily. Flute profile, helix, core design, edge preparation, radius, neck clearance, tolerance, substrate and coating may still differ even when the marked dimensions are identical.
Does selecting an HRC65 series tool guarantee performance in HRC65 material?
No. The actual result also depends on the specific tool model, workpiece grade and measured hardness, operation, engagement, machine rigidity, holder runout, coolant and cutting parameters.
